Eleven students representing five teams will compete head-to-head today in the finals of the 2017 AMP University Challenge.

Finals day is the culmination of a process that began with financial planning students submitting a discussion paper on a hypothetical client case study. The 11 finalists have been selected from more than 160 students representing 79 teams from 19 educational institutions – including universities and TAFE.

Entry to the challenge is open only to students who are enrolled in a university-level undergraduate or postgraduate course or qualification. Nine of the finalists in 2017 are male and two are female, and they represent four universities and TAFE NSW.

Today’s events will include a quiz on technical knowledge, an eight-minute presentation on a relevant industry topic – this year it is what new initiatives could be introduced into the financial planning profession to reduce the escalating burden of funding a growing number of retirees – and a mock client meeting, during which each team will present a statement of advice.

The days starts at 9.15am and concludes with the announcement of the winners at about 6.15pm.

The winning team will pick up a cheque for $5000, along with $3000 for their educational institution. Each member of the winning team will also receive complimentary registration to: the 2018 AMP Summit; the 2017 FPA Professionals Congress (along with 12 months of complimentary FPA student membership); and an AMP professional development day to be held during 2018. The winning students also receive a copy of The Trusted Adviser, by Maister, Green and Galford; and all finalists receive a complimentary subscription to Professional Planner, online and in print.

Professional Planner is a media partner to the challenge and will produce coverage of the day in the December edition of the magazine and next week on its website.
