SMSF sector still largest – APRA quarterly super stats released

SMSF numbers increased by 5.5% over the 12 months to 30 June 2016 from 547,301 to 577,236

Industry Fund sector had the greatest percentage increase

APRA has just released its quarterly super stats for the quarter ended 30 June 2016.  The stats are for the four quarters to the June 2016 quarter.

In terms of total super assets (estimated as at 30 June 2016 to be $2110b) the SMSF Sector remains the largest with 29.5% of total super assets with the next two largest sectors being Retail Sector with 25.8% and the Industry Fund Sector with 22.1% of total super assets.

In percentage terms the Industry Fund Sector had the greatest increase in sector asset value – increased by 80% basis points from a share of 21.3% to 22.3%.  The sector which had the largest decease by sector asset value was the Retail Sector decreasing by 50% basis points from 26.3% to 25.8%.  The SMSF Sector decreased by 10 basis points.   The increases and decreases are over the 12 months from June 2015 to June 2016.

Finally, the number of SMSFs increased by 5.5% over the 12 months to 30 June 2016 from 547,301 to 577,236.
