DMG Financial
Sale, Victoria

Lucas moved to Sale, in Victoria’s Gippsland region, in 1985 to fill a vacancy in the accounting practice of DMG Financial.

In 1992 the firm branched out into financial planning, and in 1996 it acquired its own Australian financial services licence (AFSL).

Last year the firm was named Licensee Select National Practice of the Year, beating strong competition to the title.

The firm employs 13 people in its financial planning division, six of whom are authorised representatives. Lucas says Sale is a well-serviced market, and a good one for financial planning businesses.

“We find people are very loyal,” he says.

“If you do the right thing and look after them, they are very loyal – I have got clients today who I’ve had since I started. They refer well; they trust each other’s opinions; and we have had a lot of strong referrals over the years from many of our clients.”

Sale has been a stable market over the years, with a RAAF base located nearby and Esso housing its Bass Strait gas operations there.

“There have been changes, as there always are, but the rural and farming sectors are fairly strong,” Lucas says.

“All those areas are good employers, and then they feed into other industries.

“It’s a really good town.”

How the protection of a prudential regulator convinced Mulino to revive DBFO

The additional consumer protections provided by a prudential regulator ultimately convinced Minister for Financial Services Daniel Mulino that he could go ahead with a restricted form of the new class of adviser proposals contained in the Delivering Better Financial Outcomes reforms. At the Conexus 2026 Retirement Leaders Summit on Wednesday, Mulino said his thinking had been reshaped by the collapse of the Shield and First Guardian managed investment schemes.
