Prime Minister Julia Gillard has held the seat of Lalor, Victoria since 1998 and was sworn in as Australia’s first female Prime Minister on 24 June 2010.
Born in Wales, Ms Gillard immigrated to Australia in 1966. She studied Arts and Law at the University of Adelaide and began work as a solicitor with the law firm Slater and Gordon, becoming a partner in 1990. She was appointed Chief of Staff to the then Victorian Opposition Leader, John Brumby and served him until her election to Lalor in 1998. Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Ms Gillard held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education; Employment and Workplace Relations and Social Inclusion.
