A SUITE of workshops designed to provide accountants with practical support and guidance on new
licensing requirements is being launched around Australia.
Licensing for Accountants, together with Holley Nethercote financial services lawyers, will deliver their
inaugural round of Limited Licence Workshops over the next two months.
The events, to be held in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, will provide much-needed
practical support and information to accountants who are trying to come to terms with limited licences
and authorisations.
CEO of Licensing for Accountants, Kath Bowler, said these events were specifically designed to address
the challenges being faced by accountants.
“The issues confronting accountants are unique,” Ms Bowler said. “They are experienced advisers who now have to approach their clients in a different way, and document their advice in a different, and much more structured manner.”
The workshops are divided into two parts, with a focus on advice in the morning and compliance in the
afternoon.
“Anyone providing advice under a limited licence or authorisation will benefit from attending the
morning sessions,” Ms Bowler said.
The afternoon sessions will cater for Responsible Managers and support staff who are assisting in
compliance with the licensing requirements.
With less than 1,000 Limited Licence Holders across Australia at present, Ms Bowler said networking
opportunities were of enormous value to this small practice community.
“We are already directly supporting more than 100 accountants now through our monthly subscription
program, and have seen the direct benefits our clients have drawn from networking with others going
through the same journey,” she said.
Partner at Holley Nethercote, Paul Derham, has been working with Licensing for Accountants to develop
support for accountants in this space.
“The $1.6m transfer cap and similar case studies, sending an SOA, knowing which exemptions apply –
these are the practical issues we’ll tackle in the workshops.” Mr Derham said.
Ms Bowler said she hoped the workshops would provide Limited Licence holders with the support and
confidence they needed to grow their licensed advisory services.
“There are certainly challenges, but equally there are so many opportunities for accountants to provide
licensed advice. They just need the right support so they can get back to their core business of providing
good advice,” Ms Bowler said.
The workshops are being sponsored by CPA Australia. CPA’s Director of Public Practice, Peter Docherty,
said he was excited to be supporting the event and subsidising the cost for participants.
“CPA Australia is committed to supporting accountants who have embarked on the Limited Licensing
journey and these workshops are a fantastic opportunity to deliver on that commitment,” Mr Docherty
said.
