Trust becomes primary retention driver

Members who have changed jobs since joining Equip have for the first time ranked trust in the fund ahead of investment returns for staying with the fund.

In Equip’s 2016 member survey conducted by CoreData, just over a third of these 730 members nominated trust as their biggest reason for staying, with investment returns being nominated by 27.7%. Good service was nominated by 25.3% of these members, ahead of low fees at 23.5%.

Equip Executive Officer, Member Relationships, Justin Sadler, said the survey showed the vital part that trust in the fund played in retaining members, particularly during periods of investment volatility.

“These are always trying investment conditions for funds and their members, which is why we are continuing to prioritise development of our financial planning services and a CRM platform to enable closer, more personal and regular connection with members,” he said.

“The most important measure of success for us is how many of our members believe that we can deliver a better retirement by helping them to make better financial decisions through the educational and advisory services that we provide, along with investment performance and keeping fees low.”

Equip members on average believe they need $920,752 in super to support their lifestyle in retirement, but only 46.2% of respondents believe they are likely to achieve their ‘ideal’ balance. Females are more pessimistic about achieving this (56.7%) than males (37.1%).

Tying together the disparate elements of a solid retirement plan can present real challenges in the absence of a clear philosophy.
