Salkow is now indulging his passion for numbers and helping people in an environment where he feels unconflicted, and where he believes that everything the firm does is – and can be shown to be – in his clients’ best interests. And he gets a big buzz from being able to present clients with a range of options to potentially meet their needs.
“That initial meeting, just getting to know clients, getting to understand what they are trying to achieve and what makes them tick – that’s a magic moment,” he says.
“But also that initial strategy presentation meeting, where you’ve given a client several options and you’ve said to them, these are all the ways you can achieve your goals; this is how much risk you may need to take; this is what you may need to sacrifice; this is what you need to commit to, to actually achieve this. That look that they get when they realise, when they get that peace of mind, that they’ve got some direction. That is it. Once you see that, that the world is good for them, that’s a magic moment for them.
“You’ve made a difference. And it’s only because you’ve given them all those options that they can be confident in the decision.
“We’ve done the right job by the client, so I can sleep well at night; and because we do charge a fee, we get paid and we get paid well for what we do, and for providing that good service and good value; and I can at the end of the day, personally, achieve what I need to achieve.”
